Know what you're buying

Placer & lode claims

Two kinds of claims, two kinds of opportunity. Here's the difference in plain English.

Placer Claims

Gold that has weathered out of the rock and collected in stream gravels and drainages โ€” the classic pan, sluice, and trommel gold. Most of ours sit on creeks in Plumas, Sierra and Trinity Counties with documented, historic production.

  • Located in drainages with documented gold potential and historic mining
  • Range from easy-access sites with camping & fishing to remote backcountry ground
  • Many are noted as "trommel ideal" for higher-volume recovery

Lode Claims

Gold (and silver, copper, lead, zinc) still locked in the hard-rock vein where it formed. Each lode claim gets reconnaissance geology and sampling to verify the kind and quality of mineralization โ€” some even include ore stockpiles or historic tailing piles.

  • Reconnaissance geology & sampling conducted to verify mineralization
  • Organized by mineral type: gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc
  • Some properties include ore stockpiles or tailing piles

What "unpatented" means โ€” read this first

All of our claims are unpatented. That means you own the mineral rights to the property โ€” the right to explore and extract โ€” but not the surface land itself. The land remains federal, administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. It's the same footing generations of prospectors have worked from, and we'll walk you through exactly what it does and doesn't allow.

Common questions

Before you buy

What exactly do I own when I buy a claim?
The mineral rights to the property โ€” the right to explore for and extract minerals. The land itself stays federal (BLM / U.S. Forest Service). All of our claims are unpatented.
How much is the transfer fee and how do I pay?
$150 for a single claim, and less per claim when you transfer multiple filings at once. We accept PayPal, cash, check, and wire transfer.
How is the claim actually transferred to me?
Through a notarized Quitclaim deed, which we file with the county and the BLM so the transfer is recorded and official.
What do I have to do each year to keep it?
File an annual Proof of Assessment Work or a Notice of Intent to Hold. If you'd rather not track it yourself, our maintenance service handles the filings for you.
Can I camp, fish, or bring equipment onto the claim?
It depends on the specific claim and the federal rules for that parcel โ€” some sites have great camping and fishing, others are remote. We'll go over access, amenities and any restrictions for the exact claim you're considering.
Do you have claims outside California?
Yes โ€” we work claims across California, Nevada and Arizona, run from our Chester, CA and Tonopah, NV offices. Ask us what's currently available in your area of interest.
